Volunteers:
As
you become acquainted with Capital City Youth Services, focus on how confidence,
respect, responsibility, etc. can be translated into words and actions
which will show the youth how to achieve and take personal ownership of
these qualities. And always remember, there are no insignificant
interactions! Every look, touch, response, reaction, or attempt to
connect is loaded with potential.
Think
about the following questions:
-
What
skills, knowledge, & personal attributes have allowed you to succeed
so far?
Setting
reasonable yet challenging goals, voicing your opinion, standing up for
what you believe, being forgiving, family experiences, life lessons, family
love, personal beliefs/morals/values, self-esteem, and belief in yourself.
-
What
does a healthy/successful a) adult and b) teenager look like?
a)
Happy, smiling, confident, easy-going, ready to admit when they make mistakes,
mature, not afraid of challenges, taking responsibility for their actions,
forgiving of others and themselves, etc.
b)
Socially active, pushing boundaries/authority, exploring options, going
to the mall, hanging out on the basketball court, loyal to friends, learning
for themselves, etc.
-
What
is the difference between promoting development and stopping delinquency?
Motivating
good behavior, challenging youth, telling them who they are (unique, special,
an individual, etc.), giving them attention, teaching them other ways,
negotiating options.
-
What
can adults do for, or with, youth to promote positive youth outcomes?
Listen
to them, Play Therapy, talk to them, tell them who you are and where you
came from, bring life to the shelter atmosphere, try something new, etc.
Let's
put these ideas into practice. Ask the youth and staff questions
about the policies and procedures and listen for good stories; they are
the best way to learn.
Thanks!
