Guidance
for Parents: Understanding Runaway
How to Prevent a
Runaway
The best way to prevent a runaway is to spend time on a regular basis and
with each of your children. Daily attention is ideal - - time away from
the TV, video games, and other distractions. Perhaps time after the family
meal, or after homework, or after a school function or a sports practice.
During these one-on -one times, give your child your full attention.
-
LISTEN
to them in a non-judgmental way.
-
Take children's
concerns seriously. Don't dismiss their worries and fears out of hand.
-
Pay special
attention when they ask you for help. Make your responsiveness to them
a top priority.
-
Confront
warning signs or other trouble signs directly, firmly and calmly. Discuss
your concern and the consequences of their continued unacceptable behavior.
But don't lecture.
-
Talk with
others -- your child's friends, their parents, or your child's teachers
may have helpful insights or suggestions.
Don't
be reluctant to seek help from professional counselors when situations
seem beyond your control.
