Capital City Youth Services has been serving youth in crisis for over 30 years. One cannot help but look back over those years with awe, and look towards the future with the anticipation of even more success. In 1975, the YMCA Youth Home, "Someplace Else" was born - its purpose was to find a solution to the plight of runaway youth and their families. With a meager $3,000 budget, the services provided were minimal and best described as "three hots and a cot." Later, in 1981, the State of Florida passed its own Runaway and Homeless Youth Act, which called for full service centers to offer runaway and troubled youth a complete range of services, from prevention to aftercare. This continuum of services was funded in our area in 1995. Currently we provide non-residential counseling services for families and short term residential services for youth in Leon County and our seven surrounding counties, as well as any out of state runaways in need. We are also offering parenting classes, outreach services, and case management services to at risk youth and their families.
As you explore this site, we hope that you will learn about who we are, who we serve and what services we offer. The most accurate reflection of what we do, however, can only be experienced firsthand. If you could walk the halls of CCYS, you would see the relief on the faces of youth who have found a safe place to sleep, as well as hear the sounds of gratitude in the voices of families who have finally found help and support. You would also see family members hugging - that previously were not speaking; residents in the shelter solving problems together who were brought to us for violence and rage; collaboration where there was conflict. Each and every one of us is privileged to share in the lives of these young people and their families, and to be a part of their growth and improvement. We are thrilled to continue this journey that began more than a quarter of a century ago. Won't you join us?
